to the happy couple
It is nearing my brother Paul’s wedding anniversary. I was his best man and wrote the following poem as a toast to him and his bride. To commemorate their anniversary, I thought it would be nice to post the poem here.

Here’s to my best friend
of 15 odd years
we’ve shared a few stories
we’ve drank a few beers
Once our duty was Navy
but our lives were blue
as we dreamt of a life
we hoped would come true
With Honda’s full speed
and no one to miss
we’d ride into midnight’s
Virginia abyss
Remember those days
we’d sleep on the ground
view the stars in the heavens
the stars all around
And our dreams of good fortune
to find our true love
we’d hang for safekeeping
on those stars far above
We’d return to shore one day
and continue our lives
you’d work with your brothers,
boxes, and beehives
And often, I know,
you’d look up at night
and long for that dream
shining in the starlight
While loyal to family
you lived day to day
until your luck changed
one fine summer day
When you biked across Kansas
and it’s horizon of farms
your star fell to earth
and into your arms
On that day you met
your “female you”
and learned that your dreams
indeed do come true
So now are you two
together as one
organically happy
having geocache fun
And it’s plain to see
in your eyes clear and bright
the brilliance of love
like the heaven’s starlight
May you share your new dreams
forever in love
as you now, at last and together,
view the stars far above.
