georgia and russia on my mind

Medvedev was in Shanghai, as part of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), to solicit support for Russia’s military actions in Georgia. The SCO includes Russia, China, Tajikistan, Kyrgystan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan. The SCO didn’t give their support to Russia. No surprise when China interprets a nation’s domestic policy as part of that nation’s sovereign rite and takes a hands-off approach. Maybe it’s a surprise to some people that China didn’t stand by Russia. Georgia’s war is not China’s business, even if it does include old friend Russia. The SCO did release some official generic niceness about preserving unity of state and observing national boundaries.
But no formal support for Russia from China and the SCO.
This is not the most surprising news about Russia today. Also in today’s news is a story about Putin claiming that the US orchestrated the conflict in Georgia to benefit a US Presidential candidate. Of course the US is denying this emphatically. However, I just wonder how crazy this accusation is. I’ve seen in American news that Putin’s accusation against the US is either the start of another “cold war,” or just a lie and nothing more than “hot air.” I suggest it could be a third option.
Why can’t I find anyone who thinks that what Putin says might have a grain of truth?

Putin’s words are so crazy they just might be true. I mean, at least in part. Why would this kind of man make this kind of claim?! War is too messy and expensive. Cold war is not a practical way to begin a new US presidential term. International businesses wince when leaders talk this way and no country can sustain economic isolation. Maybe Putin wanted to create this kind of doubt among the general public for some reason. To create suspicion and doubt. Fear maybe. But who doesn’t already have at least some feelings of animosity towards the United States?!
Maybe Putin’s just going with some information his people found. The true answer is often the simplest. Maybe Putin just wants to bring something to light—at the risk of his legitimacy. Unfortunately he’s not offering proof. Outrageous, but knowing the US as I do, I just can’t argue that there is absolutely no possibility of anything true about Putin’s accusations. The US has a history of overtly and covertly involving itself in the affairs of other nations, to the benefit of US interests.
I’m not agreeing with Putin, nor do I condone or wish to incite any kind of violence anywhere. I am merely stating that Putin’s accusation is so bizarre it just can’t be entirely fictional unless Putin has gone mad or he is using the same intelligence the US used to identify nuclear weapons in Iraq.
